I know little of what happened to Saber or Wis'adel, as they were transported to a different dimension entirely... but I was fortunate to have a reliable companion with me through that time. It is thanks to him that I was not more seriously injured.
There were a few others, too. Kind people who were trapped in the village with us. I think that most of them were mere apparitions, but it was still heartening to meet such people in such a terrible place. We were able to work together to find a way out of that dimension.

That's sort of how it was for us, too. Anders and Shadowheart, I mean — didn't see them through that whole second part until the very end.
